Today I’ve got a tip for saving money on your groceries– something we are all probably thinking about. I’m just beginning a series of food explorations, so I will keep you updated as I go. (See Thursday’s book review for starters.)
I thought I’d keep it simple today though with a handy, easy guide to which fruits and vegetables are considered in season at different points throughout the year. You can save money on produce by buying what’s in season. I only quoted winter, spring, and year-round, so follow the link for lists of foods in season during the summer and fall. Below the list is a kid-friendly recipe using one of January’s in-season foods. Happy eating!
Winter (December, January, February): apples, belgian endive, bok choy, brussels sprouts, cherimoya, chestnuts, coconuts, dates, grapefruit, kale, kiwifruit, leeks, mushrooms, oranges, parsnips, pear, persimmons, pummelo, radicchio, red currents, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, tangerines, turnips, winter squash
Spring (March, April, May): apricots, artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, butter lettuce, chayote squash, chives, collard greens, english peas, fava beans, fennel, fiddlehead ferns, greenbeans, honeydew, mango, morel mushrooms, mustard greens, oranges, limes, pea pods, pineapple, ramps, rhubarb, snow peas, sorrel, spinach, spring baby lettuce, strawberries, sweet corn, sugar snap peas, swiss chard, vidalia onions, watercress
Year-Round: avocados, bananas, bok choy, broccoflower, broccolini, cabbage, carrots, celery, coconut, leek, lemons, lettuce, onions, papayas, bell peppers, potatoes
Here is a link to an Uncooked/Raw Applesauce recipe from Kelly at kellythekitchenkop.com. It looks yummy, so I’m trying it this week. She has plenty of other great food tips at her site as well.
Or, check out this page at the Food Network site. They have a section called In Season Now with some delicious recipe suggestions. Scroll down and you’ll see a recipe finder on the left side. Looks pretty easy.
I’d love to hear from you if you have tasty recipes for any foods that are currently in season and are willing to share!
